چکیده

Introduction Burns are a major global public health problem. It is estimated that over 300 million burn victims die each year worldwide. Most accidents are domestic or on workplace and involve mainly women and children. With the advances made in the care of burned patients, the mortality has decreased in recent years and the inhalation injury has become the leading cause of death in these patients. Mortality associated to smoke inhalation alone may be low (0-11%), but the inhalation combined with skin burns can reach 90%. Uteroglobin-related protein 1 (UGRP1) is a secretory protein expressed in the airways, and speculated to have anti-inflammatory activity.

Uteroglobin, a Possible Ligand of the Lipoxin Receptor Inhibits Serum Amyloid A-Driven Inflammation

Serum amyloid A (SAA) production is increased by inflamed arthritic synovial tissue, where it acts as a cytokine/chemoattractant for inflammatory and immune cells and as an inducer of matrix degrading enzymes. SAA has been shown to bind lipoxin A4 receptor, a member of the formyl-peptide related 2 G-protein coupled receptor family (ALX) and elicit proinflammatory activities in human primary fib...

Pathophysiological analysis of combined burn and smoke inhalation injuries in sheep.

We investigated the pathophysiological alterations seen with combined burn and smoke inhalation injuries by focusing on pulmonary vascular permeability and cardiopulmonary function compared with those seen with either burn or smoke inhalation injury alone. To estimate the effect of factors other than injury, the experiments were also performed with no injury in the same experimental setting. Lu...

Assessment of severity of ovine smoke inhalation injury by analysis of computed tomographic scans.

BACKGROUND Our goal was to evaluate computed tomographic (CT) scans of the chest as a means of stratifying smoke inhalation injury (SII) severity. METHODS Twenty anesthetized sheep underwent graded SII: group I, no smoke; group II, 5 smoke units; group III, 10 units; and group IV, 16 units. CT scans were obtained at 6, 12, and 24 hours after injury. Each quadrant of each slice was scored subj...

Expression of uteroglobin in the human endometrium.

Uteroglobin is a progesterone binding protein, a member of the antiflammin gene family and possibly a novel cytokine. Initially, uteroglobin was identified as the major protein of rabbit uterine secretion during the phase of preimplantation. Counterparts of the rabbit uteroglobin or its gene are described in rat, mouse, hamster, hare, pig, horse and human. While uteroglobin appears as one of th...

Ventilation-perfusion alterations after smoke inhalation injury in an ovine model.

To study the pathophysiological mechanism of progressive hypoxemia after smoke inhalation injury, alterations in ventilation-perfusion ratio (VA/Q) were studied in an ovine model by using the multiple inert gas elimination technique. Because ethane was detected in expired gas of some sheep, we replaced ethane with krypton, which was a unique application of the multiple inert gas elimination tec...
